A recent report from SPORT has offered fresh insight into Barcelona’s long-term plans on the touchline, revealing that the club have already identified Hansi Flick’s contract extension as a top priority.

The current idea within the club is to secure the German coach’s future until 2028, a move that would underline their growing faith in his project and leadership.

From Flick’s point of view, however, the situation is not so straightforward.

The coach believes it is still too early to rush into talks, mainly because the presidential elections have not yet taken place and because his current contract already runs until 2027.

Notably, Flick renewed his deal in May 2025, adding an extra year to provide stability at a delicate moment for the club.

Presidential election key

Now, Barcelona also enter an election year in January, a factor that influences every major decision at the club, including those related to the first team.

Even so, there is a strong feeling within the hierarchy that Flick represents the right man to lead the sporting project beyond the current political cycle.

His team has ended 2025 in outstanding form, driven by an impressive winning run in La Liga, and the mood around the dressing room is one of belief and unity.

This strong performance is one of the main reasons why Barça are keen to move early.

The plan is to add one more season to the deal signed just over half a year ago, reinforcing Flick’s position and sending a message of continuity.

Parties in talks

It is said that talks have already taken place behind the scenes. Flick is fully aware of the club’s intentions, as is his agent, Pini Zahavi, who has held informal discussions with Barcelona.

Flick’s excellent relationship with Joan Laporta works in the club’s favour, and notably, there is no opposition among potential presidential candidates regarding his continuity.

Flick is settled in Barcelona, feels connected to the city and the club, and has made it clear internally that he remains loyal to those who trusted him when he was without a team.

For now, though, patience rules, but the direction of travel is unmistakable.
