CAN 2025 – Algeria vs Burkina Faso: Vladimir Petkovic issues a warning

As Algeria stands on the verge of reaching the round of 16 after just their second match, Vladimir Petkovic refuses to give in to any hint of euphoria. Facing Burkina Faso, the head coach has announced an “almost decisive” showdown where mentality will matter just as much as tactics.

“What’s very important is that we won the first match and started this competition on the right foot,” he reminds,

making it clear that the 3–0 win over Sudan does not erase their shortcomings or the demands of top-level football.

An opponent worthy of respect

The Swiss-Croatian tactician does not downplay the magnitude of the task ahead:

“This is a very competitive side, strong both physically and mentally. A team that shows on the pitch exactly what it wants to achieve, with high morale.”

The Stallions, who snatched victory late in their opening match, embody the danger of this AFCON, where any lapse in concentration is punished.

“I always say the next match is even harder,” Petkovic insists,

issuing a warning not just to his opponents but to his own players as well.

Identity, principles, and a full 90 minutes

For him, the key is simple: stay true to themselves.

“It’s important to stick to our own principles, our own patterns. You can’t completely adapt to the opponent every three days.”

Petkovic is adamant about the need for total commitment:

“For 90 minutes, we have to be strong, focused, and show our values.”

Algeria has laid the groundwork, but nothing is accomplished yet. And the former Switzerland coach concludes with determination:

“We believe in our team and will do everything to win.”
