Browns history: Memorable Christmas Eve and Day games

The Cleveland Browns have a history of some very interesting games surround the Christmas holiday.

The Cleveland Browns have only played one game on Christmas Day ever – a heartbreaking 24-22 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Baker Mayfield threw four interceptions in this game, and many fans remember this game as a pivotal moment that contributed to his departure from Cleveland. On the Packers’ side of things, this was an important game as Aaron Rodgers surpassed Brett Favre for the Packers’ all-time passing TD record.

In one of the more meaningful games in Browns history, the team won an NFL title on a last-second field goal by Lou Groza back in 1950 on Christmas Eve. This win was a huge part of the team’s legacy in this era of football and cemented players like Otto Graham in the Cleveland Browns’ history books.

In one of the worst seasons in Cleveland sports history, the Browns went 1-15 with one lone win against the San Diego Chargers on Christmas Eve in 2016. They scored a late touchdown to seal the victory, providing a rare bright spot in an otherwise bleak season.

In more recent history, Cleveland played against the New Orleans Saints on Christmas Eve in 2022. It was one of the coldest home games in Browns history and marked Deshaun Watson’s second home start for the team.
