With the Eastern Conference wide open this year, a new NBA rumor suggests the Boston Celtics could make an addition to the roster that would give them a real chance at a return to the Finals in the spring.

Heading into the 2025-26 season, expectations were far lower than normal for the Celtics. But it was understandable considering the massive hits the roster took over the last six months.

First, they lost top star Jayson Tatum during the playoffs after he suffered a ruptured Achilles. Then, the team’s new ownership pulled the trigger on some long-rumored payroll slashing and traded Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday. Plus, they let team great Al Horford walk in free agency. Having a big step back this season made sense.

However, heading into their game on Friday against the Indiana Pacers, Boston owns an 18-11 record, which is third best in the conference. Due to the brilliance of head coach Joe Mazzulla, Jaylen Brown, and one of the best defenses in the NBA, the Celtics have an opportunity to make a deep run in the playoffs if they make a notable addition to the roster before February’s trade deadline.

Yet, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, they could get a game-changing addition for the second half without even making a trade. While early estimates suggested Tatum would miss all of this season, the NBA insider claims the six-time All-Star “is determined to play” this season.

All indications are that the BOS Celtics won’t let Tatum suit up and play unless they are sure he is 100%. However, all signs suggest his recovery is going well, and the eight-year veteran being a fantastic athlete will certainly help the speed of his return.

With the Eastern Conference weaker than in past years, a healthy Tatum could make Boston a serious problem come playoff time.
