It appears the short lived Semenyo saga is over with City the destination and Liverpool never making a serious push.
Despite reports this week suggesting Liverpool’s interest in Antoine Semenyo was genuine, even the most optimistic speculation was couched in uncertainty as to wether the Reds would turn genuine interest into a firm offer to the player.
It appears now that we have reached a rather swift conclusion to this story with word today that Semenyo has decided to join Manchester Cityin January over city rivals United—and that despite their interest, Liverpool never made a firm offer to the player.
The Reds did make a preliminary approach in November, but it was always with an eye towards the summer and Alexander Isak’s recent injury is said to have not changed that stance, though one imagines even if it had it may have come too late in the game.
Semenyo has a £65M release clause that can only be triggered through the first ten days of the January transfer window. Tottenham have also regularly been rumoured as suitors but do not appear to have been one of the main contenders in the end.
Following Isak’s injury and with questions still surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future, Liverpool may now regret they didn’t push harder to establish themselves as a genuine option for the player in November—though until a deal is done anything is possible.
