What Conference Games Stand Out For Rutgers?
As the Scarlet Knights shift out of nonconference play and into the Big Ten gauntlet, I thought it would be useful to provide a preview of some of the most important games on the schedule. Conference play blends ranked opponents, historic West Coast road trips, and realistic home and away wins. These six games will define the Scarlet Knights’ conference season, testing talent, resilience, and the ability to perform on both ends of the court.
Dec. 28 — at #24 Michigan State
Context: Rutgers kicks off Big Ten play on the road against a ranked Michigan State team. The Spartans’ size and physicality make this a challenging opener for the Scarlet Knights.
Why Watch: This game sets the tone for Rutgers’ league journey. Even if the scoreboard doesn’t end in Rutgers’ favor, a competitive showing would prove the team can hold its own in hostile arenas. Road environments like this often reveal a team’s character, poise, and readiness to compete at the next level.
Jan. 8 — vs. #7 Maryland
Context: Hosting the #7 Terrapins at Jersey Mike’s Arena provides one of Rutgers’ best chances to showcase progress at home. Maryland is a perennial Big Ten powerhouse and consistently ranks nationally, meaning every possession counts. After their lackluster showing against Iowa, the Scarlet Knights will look to show that they can hang with some of the best in the country, as this will not be the last top-ten team on the schedule.
Why Watch: Home games against elite programs are a proving ground. Rutgers’ ability to compete here could signal that the Scarlet Knights are closing the gap between themselves and the league’s top contenders. Even keeping the game close would energize the fanbase and provide a confidence boost heading into the midseason stretch.
Jan. 18 — at Northwestern
Context: Rutgers hits the road for a more winnable contest against Northwestern. The Wildcats typically play a slower, methodical style that creates space for execution. This year, Northwestern is off to a 6-6 start and is entering conference play on a six-game losing streak.
Why Watch: This is a game Rutgers needs to win to build momentum. Road victories in the Big Ten are never guaranteed, but Northwestern presents a realistic opportunity to grab a key conference win. A solid showing here could also serve as a springboard for success in the later home-and-home series against Penn State.
Feb. 1 — at #17 USC
Context: Rutgers embarks on a historic West Coast road trip, opening at USC. The Trojans are a top-tier program with length, athleticism, and depth, making this an immediate test of both skill and endurance. Even without JuJu Watkins (out with an ACL injury this year), the Trojans are among the top teams in the Big Ten.
Why Watch: This is more than just a game — it’s a statement about Rutgers’ ability to handle long travel, hostile crowds, and elite-level competition. Even in defeat, competing closely on the road against a national program builds experience that pays dividends in February and March.
Feb. 4 — at #4 UCLA
Context: The second leg of the West Coast trip brings Rutgers to UCLA, another nationally ranked opponent. The Bruins combine size, speed, and tactical versatility, creating a difficult matchup in Pauley Pavilion. UCLA made it to the NCAA semifinals before falling to UConn last season, and returns star center Lauryn Betts, plus a talented lineup around her.
Why Watch: Back-to-back road games against ranked teams are as challenging as any stretch in conference play. Rutgers will need resilience, focus, and energy management to stay competitive. Performing well in Los Angeles could become a defining moment for this season’s team.
Feb. 21 — vs. Penn State
Context: The Scarlet Knights close out this key slate with a home rematch against Penn State. After traveling to State College earlier in the season, Rutgers has a chance to either even or sweep the season series and secure an important Big Ten victory. The Knights swept Penn State last year and will face off against former Rutgers guard Kiyomi McMiller, who did not pan out in Piscataway due to some off-the-court and chemistry issues.
Why Watch: Home-and-home series are pivotal for Rutgers, especially against similar opponents like the Nittany Lions. Winning this contest would not only improve the Scarlet Knights’ Big Ten standing but also give them momentum and confidence heading toward the final stretch of conference play. Fans will be watching closely as Rutgers looks to protect home court and take down one of its biggest rivals.
