Rossville guard Aiden Schaumburg is finding success at new school after struggles at Harrison.
LAFAYETTE — Rossville junior guard Aiden Schaumburg took accountability over his struggles during his last two seasons at Harrison.
His grades were poor, and Schaumburg's goal of being a primary threat on a varsity basketball program became much harder to obtain in West Lafayette.
He admitted as much after scoring 22 points in an eye opening 73-51 victory on the road against Central Catholic in Lafayette on Saturday, Dec. 20.
"I needed a change, and I'm doing well here," Schaumburg said.
Schaumburg could prove to be the missing ingredient for which Rossville has searched to accompany the star qualities of fellow classman and Rossville's single-game points record holder Brayden Thiele-Hahn.
At 6-foot-1, Schaumburg gives Rossville extra length for 1A as a defender both at guard and forward.
Schaumburg is good enough to play in Rossville's rotation but maybe would've played junior varsity or ridden the bench at varsity had he stayed at Harrison. What Schaumburg displayed, however, was an ability to shoot with confidence, score at close range and play with an aggressiveness that almost counters the speed, grace and flamboyance of Thiele-Hahn.
Rossville found another playmaker, a kid who came to their school because he was running out of options.
"It just took me a minute to find my groove, and I'm playing with confidence," Schaumburg said.
Confidence that was recognized by Rossville coach Cory Dunn.
"When I got to know him and meet him, I thought how this kid could play," Dunn said. "I thought the first few games, he was pressing the issue and trying too hard. Once he settled down and got into rhythm, we'd be able to see what he was capable of. We've seen it in practice. We saw it this fall and in open gym."
Schaumburg gave Rossville a glimpse of what the Hornets could be as a program with history but hasn't captured an IHSAA sectional title since 2021.
"It helps to have a good team around me," Schaumburg said. "Everyone believes in me. We've got Brayden scoring and working hard. We've got guys like Brody Skinner grabbing rebounds. It helps to have a team where everyone is working together."
