Report: DK Metcalf loses millions in guarantees following suspension

Metcalf’s two-game suspension is a bigger deal than we thought.

While he’s yet to hear back regarding his appeal, Steelers wide receiver D.K. Metcalf’s two-game suspension after an altercation with a fan on Sunday might’ve hurt him more than initially thought.

According to a report from CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, Metcalf’s suspension fits the bill for “conduct detrimental” to the league, voiding “at least $45 million in future guaranteed money” of the four-year, $132 million contract the receiver signed in the spring.

Metcalf’s contract originally had $60 million guaranteed. Jones notes that even a one-game suspension would void the $25 million guarantee for Metcalf’s 2026, and even the injury-protected $20 million guarantee for 2027.

Of course, it’s important to note that doesn’t mean Metcalf will lose any money — besides game checks from the suspension — just that his guarantees have been pulled. Now, if the Steelers decide to move on from the receiver in the future, they’ll have a much easier time getting out of his contract.

Still, the suspension, if upheld, hurts the team in the present. Pittsburgh is still fighting to secure playoff seeding, and losing the roster’s No. 1 receiver won’t make things any easier. However, the Steelers need just one win — or one Ravens loss — in the next two weeks to win the AFC North.

If Metcalf’s season is over, he’ll finish with 59 catches for 850 yards and six touchdowns.
