One game after going for a career high 35 points, AJ Dybantsa nearly matched that and added a triple double as BYU beat Eastern Washington 109-81 Monday night in Provo.
Eastern Washington came into the game with one of the worst defenses and BYU made them look like it. Dybantsa stole the show with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists on 85% shooting from the field. Richie Saunders added 22 points and Rob Wright and Kennard Davis each scored 17 points. BYU as a team shot 54% from the field and 16-42 (38%) from three.
BYU led 53-48 at halftime and the defense was poor in the first half, allowing EWU to get open looks from both the outside and around the basket. BYU stepped it up in the second half, holding EWU to 33 points.
AJ Dybantsa’s performance was his seventh straight game with over 20 points and continued his torrid pace as he makes his case for the National Player of the Year.
Also of note is that G-League big man Abdullah Ahmed made his season debut. Ahmed played 9 minutes off the bench, grabbing 5 rebounds and blocking 1 shot. Ahmed will need to continue to get more comfortable with his teammates and KY’s system, but it was great for him to get some run before Big 12 play begins.
BYU ends the non-conference slate 12-1 and has a 12-day break before beginning Big 12 play Saturday, January 3 at Kansas State. The game will feature two of the top five scorers in the country in AJ Dybantsa and PJ Haggerty.
