When Nick Woltemade left VfB Stuttgart for Newcastle United in a €75 million move last summer, there was plenty of debate over whether the Magpies had overpaid for the striker.
But with Woltemade having scored nine goals in 23 appearances for Newcastle so far, Germany’s director of professional football, Rudi Völler, believes the 23-year-old has shown he was worth every penny – and that the fee could even have been higher.
“I went to [Germany's] U21 games, and everyone knew he had talent,” Völler told Kicker, adding that "no one talks about" his transfer fee anymore.
“In the end, that was almost a bargain,” the Germany boss added with a laugh.
“His quality is truly exceptional.”
