Left-handed starting pitcher Tarik Skubal is in his fifth year with the Detroit Tigers, having made his MLB debut during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The 28-year-old emerged as Detroit’s ace late in 2023 after returning from flexor tendon surgery.

In 2024, Skubal was the American League’s best pitcher—winning the pitching Triple Crown and Cy Young Award while leading the Tigers back to the postseason for the first time in a decade. Over 31 starts, he went 18–4 with a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts.

He’s carried that dominance into 2025, earning his second consecutive All-Star Game selection and starting last week’s event for the American League in Atlanta.

Skubal is destined to land a $400 million deal after the 2026 season, though it’s unclear whether the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Mets will be the suitor per Buster Olney.

Former Tigers star Cameron Maybin predicted Skubal belongs on the Yankees, writing, “If the Tigers screw this up, there’s only one place Skubal belongs.....rocking pinstripes in the Bronx! Aura. Moxie. Straight bulldog. If you think he’s filthy now? Just wait ‘til he’s toeing the rubber in October at Yankee Stadium. I dare you.”

During the Tigers’ 2–1 win over the Texas Rangers on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, Skubal made franchise history with his 7th career game with ten-plus strikeouts and no walks, breaking a tie with Justin Verlander for most in Tigers history via Sarah Langs.

Through 20 starts in 2025, he leads the American League with a 2.19 ERA and owns a 10–3 record.
