No one expected the Commanders to beat the Eagles on Saturday night, but with that said, there were times in this game where our second and third teamers held their own against a far superior football team.

The Refs were on the Eagles side and made their job a bit easier, but despite that, Quinn’s group fought until the end with the journeyman Josh Johnson taking over and backups on top of backups on the field. The result was a 29-18 home loss with two games remaining in this miserable season – one more against this same Eagles team.

Below are my Studs and Duds of the game, followed by some notes.

Studs:

  • Bobby Wagner: Wagner has a very pedestrian first half, but blew up in the second half making play after play and looking like one of the few players on the team who was still interested in the game. He finished with 10 total tackles, two for a loss, one sack, one stuff and three pressures. H’s now just 15 tackles away from 2000 for his career.
  • Mike Sainristil: Mikey wasn’t perfect in coverage, but he just has a knack for making plays. On the game’s opening kickoff he forced a fumble that Kain Medrano recovered. He had a nice pass defended and four solo tackles.

Duds:

  • Von Miller: Miller look disinterested all game. He failed to set the edge numerous times and had very little positive impact.
  • Quan Martin: It’s absolutely amazing how many tackles Quan Martin continues to miss. On top of that, he was thrown out of the game for fighting.
  • Tyler Biadasz: The offensive line as a whole wasn’t very good, but Biadasz stood out as the largest wart on the toad. He allowed multiple pressures, a sack and blocked poorly in the run game.
  • Craig Wrolstad and his crew: The entire crew from this game was just AWFUL. They were clearly out to get Washington and the calls on the field, or lack thereof, made it quite obvious. The debacle started early in the game when Cooper DeJean committed a blatant pass interference on Treylon Burks in the endzone. It continued with phantom calls against Brandon Coleman (a hold that negated a first down) and a phantom offsides penalty against Tyler Owens on a missed field goal. There was a pass interference call against Noah Igbinoghene covering Smith in the back of the endzone that was just horrible.

Notes

  • Josh Johnson is abysmal. He made one of the worst throws I have ever seen that was an easy interception for Dejean.
  • Treylon Burks needs to be re-signed. The guy catches everything thrown his way (when he’s not having his arm bear-hugged by a defender).
  • Drake Jackson didn’t get a sack in his Commanders debut, but he got a few pressures, set the edge well and looked explosive.
  • Jordan Magee can flat-out FLY!
  • When Kinlaw is motivated, he’s a VERY tough man to block.
  • Johnny Newton continues to make NO impact on games!
  • Jake Moody has yet to miss a field goal as a Commander.
  • Dan Quinn should probably be on the Duds list for playing to lose. However, maybe that turns out to be the better play in the long run.
  • I want NO part of Reuben Bain Jr. in the draft.
