When asked what the game of golf has meant to him, six-time major winner Lee Trevino launched into an epic monologue on Golf Channel.
ORLANDO, Fla. – Only one player has competed in every edition of the PNC Championship since it started in 1995. That's Hall of Famer Lee Trevino, the 86-year-old legend who delighted fans on Sunday with a holed-out 60-degree wedge shot on the 13th at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club.
"I'm telling you, I've been digging worms," said Trevino during a post-round interview with Golf Channel's Todd Lewis. "I had white birds following me and I got them so fat they only followed me nine holes because I had so many worms for them."
Peter Jacobsen, who was in the booth this week for NBC, was immediately drawn to Trevino when he first came on Tour because of his perspective.
"When you look at all the intense players – Curtis Strange, Hogan, Tiger, Vijay – when they get on the range or they get on the course, they’re really focused on their performance," said Jacobsen. "Not saying Lee isn’t, but Lee has that extra ability to play great, win majors and then turn and engage with the crowd. I think sometimes people overlook just how good Lee is – how good he was."
Trevino teed it up this week with 33-year-old son Daniel for a 17th time and told Lewis that they'd come back next week if PNC wanted to do an encore.
Lewis capped off the interview by asking Trevino what the game has meant to him, and the six-time major winner launched into an epic monologue in which Trevino said if someone put a bed and a tent on the driving range, he'd sleep there.
This Lee Trevino interview is worth watching every second. 🥹🙌

"The reason I do this and the reason that I promote it and I play it like I do now is because the Lord for some reason gave me a tremendous amount of talent," said Trevino, "and I'm going to meet him pretty soon, and I damn sure don't want him to be disappointed because you know why? If he's disappointed, I'm probably going to have to caddie for Arnie."
