Piotr Zielinski’s absence from Inter’s penalty shootout against Bologna was down to a physical issue rather than a tactical choice.
According to reports from FcInterNews.it, Chivu’s decision to take the Pole off was due to fitness, not performance, issues.
The Polish midfielder was substituted just minutes before the end of the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final.
Indeed, shortly before the match headed towards penalties.
Zielinski made way for Petar Sucic, immediately raising questions given his reputation as one of Inter’s most reliable spot-kick takers.

However, the explanation is a straightforward one.
Zielinski was forced off due to cramp, with no serious injury concerns emerging in the immediate aftermath of the match.
The decision was described as a necessity rather than a precaution, ruling him out of remaining on the pitch for the shootout.
As a result, Zielinski was unable to contribute from the penalty spot despite being a natural candidate to do so.
His absence was felt during the shootout, particularly given Inter were also without Hakan Calhanoglu, leaving Cristian Chivu with limited experienced options from twelve yards.
While the timing of the substitution proved costly in hindsight, the indications suggest there is no longer-term issue for Zielinski.
The midfielder is expected to be available moving forward.
The club view the episode as an unfortunate but unavoidable setback on a night that ultimately slipped away from the Nerazzurri.
