Quinton Cypher has been one of the most coveted prospects in the 2027 class over the last year, and on Tuesday, Ryan Day and Ohio State secured a major victory on the recruiting trail.

The four-star linebacker out of Raleigh (N.C.) Millbrook held more than 30 offers and spent much of the process leaning toward Georgia, even coming close to committing to the Bulldogs. Over the past few months, however, the Buckeyes surged, and that late push proved decisive.

Cypher, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound standout, is ranked No. 167 in the Rivals Industry Ranking.

“It has been so tough,” Cypher said of the decision. “It really was a transition this fall. Last summer, I was 100 percent sure I was going to Georgia. Both schools continued to recruit me hard, and as I took my time, Ohio State started to stand out more. I couldn’t have made a bad decision with Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama or Miami, but Ohio State just felt right at the end.”

Relationships with the coaching staff ultimately pushed Ohio State over the top.

“I love the coaching staff at Ohio State. Coach Patricia’s defense is great, and he’s a former NFL coach with Super Bowl rings and so much knowledge. Coach Day is a great head coach — he’s a winner and a great guy. Then, Coach Laurinaitis is one of the best. He played the game, he played at Ohio State, and he knows the game. Playing for a guy like him will help me a lot.”

Laurinaitis, in particular, played a central role in Cypher’s decision.

“I fully trust him. He played in the NFL, he played my position, and I know he can teach, coach, and develop me. He has the best interest in his players and a plan for them. Coach Laurinaitis was a big part of me choosing Ohio State.”

Cypher also pointed to Ryan Day’s leadership as a major factor.

“Coach Day is super genuine,” he said. “He commands the locker room very well. He’s a real person who I know can coach me and mentor me.”

Visits to Columbus only reinforced that feeling.

“I’ve been up there twice, and the environment is one of the best. The game days are loud, the atmosphere is great, and the fans are some of the best in college football.”

An early decision was always part of the plan for Cypher, whose recruitment took off early.

“My recruitment started early, so I always wanted to commit early,” he said. “I want to help recruit a great class and start becoming a leader for the Ohio State recruiting class.”

On the field, Cypher backed up his elite status with production. He finished the season with 181 tackles, 48 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and four interceptions, adding three touchdowns as well.
