Lance McCullers Jr. is headed to the IL with a blister
The injuries just keep piling up for the Houston Astros.
On Tuesday, the team placed RHP Lance McCullers Jr. on the injured list with a blister on his right finger, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic. In a corresponding move, the Astros called up RHP Nick Hernandez.
McCullers has had an incredibly rough go on the mound this season, pitching to a 2-4 record with a 6.90 ERA in 11 starts. McCullers has also walked 29 batters in just 44.1 innings of work this season, which comes out to a career-high 5.9 BB/9.
Hernandez — who will be replacing McCullers on the active roster — has spent the majority of this season in Triple-A, where he has pitched to a 4-2 record with a 1.70 ERA in 34 appearances. Hernandez has also struck out 48 batters in 37.0 innings of work. He has only appeared in two major league games this season, and has given up four hits and two earned runs in 2.0 innings.
McCullers’ injury serves as yet another blow to the Astros pitching staff. He now joins a long list of injured pitchers that includes Spencer Arrighetti, Ronel Blanco, J.P. France, Luis Garcia, Cristian Javier, and Hayden Wesneski.
The Astros have also seen injuries outside of their pitching. Being without Isaac Paredes, Jeremy Pena, Yordan Alvarez and Jake Meyers among others.
As they’ve done all season, Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez will be tasked with carrying whatever is left of the Astros’ starting rotation as the team looks to make a push towards another World Series title.
