Iowa football duo earns FWAA All-American honors

After stellar individual efforts during the Iowa football season, graduate seniors Logan Jones and Kaden Wetjen have earned FWAA All-American honors.

After stellar individual efforts during the Iowa football season, graduate senior center Logan Jones andreturn specialist Kaden Wetjen were honored as first-team All-Americans by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) on Thursday, Dec. 18.

The FWAA is one of five outlets recognized by the NCAA to determine consensus All-Americans (Walter Camp, Associated Press, Sporting News, American Football Coaches of America) and has now recognized at least one Hawkeye on its list for the 13th straight season, which is the second-longest active streak behind Alabama's 18 consecutive years.

Over the last four seasons combined, Iowa has had 10 FWAA All-Americans (all first-team), second to Ohio State's 11 in that span. Regarding special teams All-American distinctions, the Hawkeyes have earned FWAA honors in five of the last seven seasons. During the entire 13-year streak, 18 Hawkeyes earned first-team honors, and five have landed on the second-team roster.

For Jones, this is yet another first-team distinction that pairs with his honors from Walter Camp, AP, AFCA, and The Sporting News. He was also named the recipient of the 2025 Rimington Trophy and is a first-team All-Big Ten honoree.

Anchoring Iowa's offensive line, which is a Joe Moore Award finalist, the native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, has started 50 career games and has served as a game captain in all 12 games this season. Along with the rest of the line, Jones’ protection has helped Mark Gronowski break Iowa single-season quarterback records for both rushing yards (491) and rushing touchdowns (15).

Iowa Hawkeyes wide receiver Kaden Wetjen (21) returns a punt to the endzone against the Michigan State Spartans Nov. 22, 2025 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa.

As for Wetjen, the 5-foot-9, 196-pound native of Williamsburg, Iowa, was previously honored as a first-team All-American by both Walter Camp and The Sporting News and a 2024 second-team selection by the AFCA.

Wetjen is the first two-time recipient of the Big Ten Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year Award and was also named a first-team all-conference honoree by both the coaches and media this season.Β

Wetjen, who is a Jet Award finalist for the second year in a row and could become the first to win the award back-to-back years, leads the nation with 965 combined kick return yards, while also ranking first in punt return yards (28.3).

This season, Wetjen has amassed several impressive feats, including becoming the first Hawkeye to score a rushing, receiving, punt return, and kickoff return touchdown in a career. Wetjen's 62-yard punt return touchdown against the Spartans cemented his name in Iowa immortality by passing Tim Dwight for the most in Hawkeye history (6).

In a fascinating stat, Kaden Wetjen's special-teams score marks the third straight game in which Iowa has had a punt-return touchdown in Kinnick Stadium against Michigan State, joining Charlie Jones (2020) and Cooper DeJean (2023).

No. 23 Iowa (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten) will face No. 14 Vanderbilt (10-2, 6-2 SEC) in the Dec. 31 ReliaQuest Bowl at 11 a.m. CT, in Tampa, Florida, on ESPN.
