Lizbeth Ovalle awarded the 2025 FIFA Marta Award for her ‘Camaroncin’ goal

The former Tigres player is the first Mexican player to win the FIFA Marta Award.

Mexican National Team member and former Tigres Femenil player Lizbeth Ovalle was awarded the 2025 FIFA Marta Award. The award was given during FIFA’s The Best Awards that has been held annually since its inception in 2017. Its uniqueness is due to the awards being voted on by managers, captains, journalists and fans.

The list of 11 nominees for the Marta Award were announced in early November and it was not surprising to see that Ovalle was nominated after her beauty of a goal that was later dubbed ‘Camaroncin.’

FIFA Marta Award Nominees:

Lizbeth Ovalle (Mexico), Jordyn Bugg (United States), Mariona Caldentey (Spain), Ashley Cheatley (England), Kyra Cooney-Cross (Australia), Jon Ryong-Jong (North Korea), Marta (Brazil), Vivianne Miedema (Netherlands), Kishi Nuñez (Argentina), Ashley Sentnor (United States), Khadija Shaw (Jamaica).

The Marta Award was founded just a year ago in 2024 and is the women’s equivalent to FIFA Puskás Award. The Puskás Award is handed to the player that has the most ‘beautiful goal’ of that calendar year. It is a mix of men and women’s players but no woman has ever won the award, though Stephanie Zambra placed second in 2014. While some have criticized the creation of this award, it is nice to be able to see women players be noticed for their goals.

Ovalle’s goal came during the LIGA MX Femenil 2025 Clausura against Chivas while she was still playing with Tigres. It was the only goal of the night that many still do not understand how it happened. In the 75th minute of the game, still tied at 0-0, Tigres was awarded a corner that the Chivas defense was unable to clear. Jenni Hermoso sent the ball into the box where Ovalle was standing with her back to the goal as she kicked the ball backwards towards the net with her left foot. This beauty of a goal helped them win the game and an award named after a legend in the women’s game. Marta is also Ovalle’s club teammate as the Mexican player made a move to the NWSL to play for the Orlando pride in August for a record $1.1 million fee. Ovalle has brought pride to Mexico after winning a legendary award from a legendary player.
