Norwegian cyclist Tobias Halland Johannessen is set to race on despite collapsing at the finish line of the 16th stage of the Tour de France on Mont Ventoux on Tuesday.

Images showed the 25-year-old lying on the ground being treated by paramedics before being transported away in an ambulance.

His Uno-X Mobility team said in a statement that he had experienced pain in his upper right abdomen and was taken to hospital.

Norwegian broadcaster TV2 later reported that Johannessen had announced his intention to start Wednesday's 17th stage between Bollène and Valence.

The eighth-placed rider had lost contact with the group around overall leader Tadej Pogacar. Johannessen eventually finished in 28th place, 5 minutes 11 seconds behind stage winner Valentin Paret-Peintre of France.

In the overall standings, the Norwegian is now 17:01 behind Pogacar.
