Alabama's CFP first round opponent, Oklahoma has many names to know, headlined by the 2025 Lou Groza Award winner.
For the second time this season, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Oklahoma Sooners are set to meet in a high-stakes contest.
However, the rematch this time will come in a game that has significantly higher stakes attached, as the two teams collide in the College Football Playoff (CFP) first round, a game where the winner advances to the quarterfinals vs. No. 1 seeded Indiana, while the loser's season comes to an end.
As for that prior matchup, Alabama and Oklahoma previously in Tuscaloosa back on Nov. 15 in a game where the Crimson Tide were upset at home, 23-21. That game essentially kept Oklahoma's CFP hopes alive, while forcing Alabama into a must-win situation throughout the remainder of the regular season.
Looking ahead to this latest matchup now, many of the same players who gave Alabama problems a few weeks ago are still in prominent roles entering this contest, and are likely to make an impact Friday night.
Here is a look at five Oklahoma Sooners to know in particular entering Friday's CFP first round matchup, as well as how each performed against Alabama earlier this season.
Isaiah Sategna III, Wide Receiver, Redshirt Junior
Leading the Oklahoma offense is one of the SEC's top wide receivers in Isaiah Sategna III, a redshirt junior who had four receptions for 26 yards, as well as a 21-yard rush and 42-yard punt return, against Alabama earlier this season. Oklahoma's leading receiver, Sategna has hauled in 65 receptions for 948 yards and seven touchdowns this season, while also having rushed for 24 yards on four attempts, as well as leading the SEC with 23 punt returns for a total of 301 yards.
Kip Lewis, Linebacker, Redshirt Junior
One of Oklahoma's leaders defensively is Kip Lewis, a redshirt junior linebacker who had seven tackles, two sacks, and two TFL against Alabama earlier this season. Lewis currently leads the Oklahoma defense with 72 total tackles, 35 of which are solo, along with 8.5 TFL, three sacks, and four pass defenses.
Tate Sandell, Kicker, Redshirt Junior
A player who went 3-of-3 on field goals, as well as 2-of-2 on extra points, earlier this season against Alabama, the Sooners have the top kicker in college football via Tate Sandell, a redshirt junior who won this season's Lou Groza Award. Awarded to the nation's top kicker, Sandell is 23-of-24 on field goals this season with a college football best 95.8% field goal percentage, while also 32-of-32 on extra point attempts.
Taylor Wein, Defensive Line, Redshirt Sophomore
Alongside others such as R Mason Thomas, Taylor Wein is a notable name to know on Oklahoma's defensive line, as the redshirt sophomore had three tackles, one sack, and one TFL against the Crimson Tide earlier this season. Wein is leading the Sooners defense with 14 TFL this season, while also owning 37 total tackles, 20 of which are solo, as well as six sacks, one interception, one pass defense, and one forced fumble.
John Mateer, Quarterback, Redshirt Junior
Lastly, Oklahoma starting quarterback John Mateer has had a bit of an up-and-down season due to an injury, and in a win over Alabama, completed 15-of-23 passes for 138 yards while also rushing for 23 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. This season, Mateer has completed 62.1% of passes for 2,578 yards and a 12:10 TD:INT ratio, while also rushing for 416 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns on 130 attempts.
