The Philadelphia Phillies did something last night that hadn't happened in the MLB in more than five decades, leading to a dramatic extra-innings win over the Boston Red Sox.
With a heads-up play by infielder Edmundo Sosa, the Phillies won on a rare catcher's interference call that stunned the Red Sox and propelled the Phils to a much needed win.
See the highlights below.
Who won the Phillies game last night?
The Phillies topped the Red Sox 3-2 in 10 innings after Philly challenged a call that was overturned and led to a catcher's inference on Red Sox catcher Carlos Narváez.

After outfielder Brandon Marsh started the inning at second as the designated ghost runner, the Phils eventually loaded the based for Sosa.
On a 1-2 pitch from Boston pitcher Jordan Hicks, Sosa checked his swing but immediately pointed at Narváez and called for a challenge.
After a short delay following a Phillies' challenge, Sosa was awarded first base which forced in Marsh as the game's winning run.
A celebration ensued at first base as Phillies players rushed out of the dugout to mob Sosa.

What is catcher's interference?
The batter is awarded first base if the catcher (or any other fielder) interferes with him at any point during a pitch, according to MLB.com.
If first base was occupied at the time of the pitch, the runner who held the base is permitted to move up one base. This also applies if first and second base were occupied or the bases were loaded at the time of the pitch.
If first base had been empty at the time of the pitch, no additional runners are permitted to advance.
When catcher interference occurs, the umpire will allow the play to progress because the outcome of the play may be more desirable than the interference. In that case, the offensive manager can elect to accept the outcome of the play over the interference.
Phillies win historic walk-off
This is only the second time an MLB team won on a walk-off as a result of a catcher's interference in league history, according to Stathead.

Per @Stathead, it's only the 2nd walk-off catcher's interference in MLB history. pic.twitter.com/wU38zsQeAJ
The last time it occurred was on Aug. 1 1971, when Hall-of-Fame catcher Johnny Bench was called for interference in the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Dodgers Stadium.

According to baseball reporter Jayson Stark, the feat was always accomplished by the Phillies' Double A team, the Reading Fightin' Phils, during a game in 2007.
