The Phoenix Suns have made several changes this offseason, including hiring their third head coach in as many seasons. They’ve also made some big updates to the roster, which has included trading Kevin Durant and buying three-time All-Star Bradley Beal out of his contract.

Now, the Suns could be considering replacing one former expensive All-Star with another former expensive All-Star. Though this time he’ll sign for a bargain rate.

According to NBA expert Marc Stein, the Suns are one of several teams that have recently discussed a contract with free agent Ben Simmons. However, the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Sacramento Kings have also been sniffing around the three-time All-Star’s market this summer.

“League sources say that the Suns have also had some recent dialogue with former All-Star Ben Simmons, who I’m told has drawn interest since free agency began from Boston, New York and Sacramento.”

While he’s drawn a great amount of criticism in the past for being an expensive player offering minimal value, Simmons is still a two-time member of the NBA’s All-Defensive team. Yet, he’s no longer playing on a $177 million contract.

Sure, he hasn’t made an All-Star team or even earned an individual accolade since 2021, the year before he sat out an entire season with a back injury. Yet, Simmons is still a more than capable defender/distributor, even if he doesn’t contribute much as a scorer.
