Charlie Woods faces long odds to make the cut at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship after a difficult opening day at Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas.
Woods, a rising junior at the Benjamin School and the son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, shot 81 (11-over) in the first round on July 21. He is tied for 242nd after the first day of play.
Donning a Benjamin School golf team hat, Woods struggled out of the gate on Monday with bogey or worse on six of his first eight holes.
California's Kailer Stone and China's Qiyou Wu lead the stroke play competition at 5-under. The estimated cut line is 3-over par.
The U.S. Junior Amateur features a 264-player field with stroke play at Trinity Forest Golf Club and Brook Hollow Golf Club, both in Dallas.
The field will cut to the top 64 after two rounds of stroke play. Trinity Forest will then host championship match play rounds with the final match scheduled for July 26.
Past winners of the U.S. Junior Amateur include current world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (2013), Jordan Spieth (2009, 2011) and Tiger Woods (1991, 1992, 1993).
