The New York Yankees are trying to reclaim the American League East lead and make a deep postseason run. They could be in the market for some bullpen help at the trade deadline.
When the Yankees traded for Devin Williams, they thought they were getting a shutdown closer. Instead, he has been inconsistent and could be a liability in the postseason, where he has already struggled in his career. ESPN's Jeff Passan suggested that the Yankees could be a fit for Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar at the trade deadline.
"In a market replete with relief options, 30-year-old Bednar brings high-end performance without quite the price tag of his peers," wrote Passan. "His swing-and-miss stuff has been elite since his return from Triple-A, and he has more than salvaged his trade value: Over his past 18 outings, Bednar has struck out 23, walked four and posted a 0.00 ERA."
Bednar is under contract for one more season, so if the Yankees move on from Williams after the year ends, Bednar would be there to take over as the full-time closer if needed. While Williams has pitched better after reclaiming the closer's role, he has not lived up to expectations.
Williams is a two-time All-Star and two-time Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year. When he's at his best, he's borderline unhittable. Luke Weaver is an option to close games if the Yankees are not pleased with Williams.

Even if Williams holds on to the closer's role this year, Bednar would be a great option for next year, if Williams walks, or simply a great arm in the back of the bullpen. Bednar led the National League in saves in 2023. He struggled last season, and to start this season. He was sent to Triple-A, but has been lights out since returning. Since rejoining the big leagues, he has a 1.74 ERA and 12 saves.
