A watch worthy of the occasion.
When Scottie Scheffler lifted the Claret Jug this weekend, you’d be forgiven for paying more attention to what was on his wrist than in his hands.
The world’s No. 1 golfer won the Open Championship Sunday at Royal Portush, and he decided to don the coveted Rolex Submariner “Kermit” while accepting his trophy.
Ref. 16610LV was introduced back in 2003, to celebrate the Submariner’s 50th anniversary. In production until 2010, the watch is the first from Rolex to come with a green bezel insert, done up here in aluminum. The Oystersteel timepiece also offers a classic Submariner case in 40 mm, with thinner lugs and more traditional proportions along with a black dial. It’s that green-and-black color combo that reminded collectors of a certain famous frog from the Muppets gang, and so the “Kermit” nickname was born.
Golf’s No. 1 is no stranger to the Crown. The golfer has been a Rolex ambassador since 2022, sporting plenty of timepieces from the brand over the years. For his first Masters, Scheffler rocked a Rolex GMT Master II “Root Beer” when he took home the first-place trophy. Last year, he donned a Rolex Submariner “Hulk” while nabbing his second Masters win—a choice that paired rather well with his new green jacket. That timepiece, which made its debut back in 2010, offers up a green Cerachrom bezel and a green sunray dial.
Scheffler’s performance in the Open Championship at Royal Portrush was just as impressive as his timepiece. At the 153rd iteration of the event, the American golfer dominated on the green, earning a score of 68 and managing to stay four strokes ahead of his opponents on Sunday. Scheffler has now won three of the four majors; he’ll attempt to snag his career Grand Slam at next year’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
Ahead of the British Open last Tuesday, Scheffler opened up quite a debate on the meaning of sport in general and what it means to win. “To get to live out your dreams is very special, but at the end of the day, I’m not out here to inspire the next generation of golfers. I’m not out here to inspire someone to be the best player in the world because what’s the point? This is not a fulfilling life. It’s fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it’s not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart,” he said, according to the PGA Tour’s news outlet.
No matter how Scheffler feels about victory, though, he has certainly won in the watch department.
