The New York Mets will retire former third baseman David Wright’s No. 5 jersey before Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Wright, 42, played for the Mets from 2004-18 and was a seven-time MLB All-Star, two-time Gold Glove winner and two-time Silver Slugger recipient. He became a member of the 30-30 club by hitting 30 home runs and stealing 34 bases in 2007.

Wright participated in the Mets' 2015 playoff run, during which they reached the World Series before losing to the Kansas City Royals. The latter part of his career was impacted by multiple back injuries, which limited him to just 77 total games from 2015 until his retirement in 2018.

Wright is considered by many as one of the best players in Mets history, and he gave an emotional statement when asked about the “overwhelming” feeling of having his jersey retired.

“I just think that the support with my family in the first couple rows, friends that have flown all over the country to come in and the support from all over the city,” Wright told reporters during a pregame press conference on Saturday. “Seeing No. 5 on the backs of so many people in New York has been humbling.

“Former teammates, I’ve gotten the chance to hang out with them for the past couple of days. And as we old players like to do, we reminisce about the good old days.”

The jersey retirement ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. ET on SNY before the second game of the Mets' three-game series against the Reds, which starts at 4:10 p.m. ET. Wright will also be inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame.

“Thanks to the organization, Steve [Cohen] and Alex [Cohen], they’ve made this nothing but first-class and have gone over the top in accommodating more people than they certainly should’ve,” Wright concluded. “[They] welcome me and my family with open arms.”
