Infielder Nolan Gorman is in his fourth season with the St. Louis Cardinals. The 25-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft and debuted for the major-league roster during the 2022 season.
In his first full year with the Cardinals in 2023, he showed flashes of excellence and raw power batting .236 with an .805 OPS with 27 home runs and 76 RBIs. Unfortunately, he appeared in 119 games because of chronic back problems, which has hindered his ability to stay on the field during his career.
Last year, Gorman had a disappointing season and never fully returned to his 2023 form, which led to his demotion to Triple-A towards the end of the season.
In 2025, Gorman has been back on the big-league roster, making regularly scheduled appearances at designated hitter in an attempt to keep his bat in the lineup.
Unfortunately, Gorman was scratched ahead of Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the team announced today that he would be placed on the injured list with back pain.

Thomas Saggese was recalled from Class AAA in a corresponding move.
Gorman’s 2025 season had been more productive than last year although he still hadn’t returned to his peak offensive production in 2023. In 66 games this year, Gorman has a .219 batting average, .718 OPS, nine home runs and 29 RBIs.
As the trade deadline approaches and the Cardinals sit at 51–47—just outside the playoff picture—losing Gorman is a significant blow in a stretch where every game will determine the organization’s path forward.
