The Boston Red Sox making another trade with a team in the American League East might be surprising during the trade deadline, but it can't be counted out.
When searching for potential trade options around the American League East, it seems likely that the only way this could happen is if the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles decide to fully sell. Even then, however, it isn't a guarantee that they'd want to move players to the Red Sox.
However, according to a recent report from Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, the Red Sox have Yandy Diaz, the Rays' star infielder, high on their list.
The Rays, 50-47 and only 5.5 games out in the American League East, probably aren't sellers as of now.
“The Red Sox hurt the Rays’ playoff chances by sweeping them in a four-game set before the break and are now 2½ games above Tampa Bay, which seemed — entering the last week — like it would be a cautious buyer. But if the Rays do what they always do, and trade players getting close to free agency, someone like Yandy Díaz could be available. If he is, sources indicate, he’d be high on the wish list of some Red Sox decision-makers,” he wrote.
It's possible that if things don't go the Rays' way over the next week and a half before the trade deadline, they could look to sell.
However, Diaz has been a rumored trade candidate over the past season and a half, and has yet to be dealt. While the Red Sox could entice them with a great farm system, it's likely a pipe dream at the moment.
