Vote: Des Moines Register metro-area male Athlete of the Week for July 13-19

Here are the Register's male Athlete of the Week candidates from the metro area for the week of July 13-19.

The week of July 13-19 saw the IHSAA state baseball tournament fields set in Classes 3A and 4A.

In 3A, Carlisle and Saydel joined Martensdale St. Marys in 1A and Van Meter in 2A as state baseball tournament participants from the Des Moines metro area. Three 4A teams from the metro area qualified for state in Johnston, Waukee Northwest and Waukee.

There were several standout performances from metro-area baseball players during the 3A and 4A substate semifinals on July 14 and substate finals on July 16.

Here are the Des Moines Register's male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of May July 13-19. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Chuck Berdovich, Waukee Northwest

Berdovich threw five strong innings for the No. 5 Waukee Northwest baseball team in a 2-1 victory over Southeast Polk during the Class 4A Substate 2 championship game on July 16 at Waukee.

Berdovich gave up one earned on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Will Nuss, Johnston

Nuss was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for the No. 3 Johnston baseball team during its 5-2 victory over West Des Moines Valley in the Class 4A Substate 4 championship game on July 16 at Johnston.

All three of his hits were doubles. Nuss scored and drove in one run apiece with one walk, and he added one assist and putout apiece with no errors at third base.

Hayden Mohwinkle, Carlisle

Mohwinkle had a strong showing at the plate and he was also the winning pitcher during Carlisle's 11-5 victory over defending 3A state champion North Polk in the 3A Substate 7 championship game on July 16 at Carlisle.

Mohwinkle went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs at the plate. He gave up three earned runs on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings as the winning pitcher.

Brady Hicks, Saydel

Hicks threw an impressive outing to lead Saydel past Benton Community in a 2-1 pitcher's duel during the 3A Substate 8 championship game on July 16 at Saydel High School.

Hicks threw a complete-game four-hitter to get the win. Hicks gave up one unearned run and he struck out seven batters with two walks.

Grant Sorenson, Waukee

Sorenson hit a game-winning two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the No. 10 Waukee baseball team a 7-6 comeback victory over Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the 4A Substate 3 championship game on July 16 at Waukee.

Sorenson finished the game 2-for-4 with a single to go along with his game-winning two-run double. He also gave up three runs on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 3 1/3 innings of work at pitcher for the Warriors.
