"The chancellor is a fanatical supporter of this women's European championship," he added.
According to Kornelius, Merz would have liked to travel to Switzerland for the semi-final against Spain on Wednesday, but that will not be possible due to the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Berlin on the same day.
The final will take place on Sunday in Basel.
