With the 2025-26 sports season looming, it's time to recap some of the best moments from the previous season.
Several Las Cruces-area teams won state titles, athletes broke state records and coaches earned milestone victories across the 2024-25 season. The Las Cruces Sun-News has picked 12 of these moments as nominees for the greatest one from the last sports season. The winning moment will be decided by you, the readers.
Las Cruces, Mayfield, Centennial, Organ Mountain, Gadsden, Chaparral and Mesilla Valley Christian all have teams or athletes among the nominees.
The poll, located at the bottom of the page, will close on July 27 at 11 p.m. The winner will be announced the following day on July 28. There are no restrictions, so vote now and vote often.

Centennial softball wins the 5A state championship undefeated
Centennial completed its perfect 30-0 season with back-to-back state championships and its third title in school history this year. The Hawks won the District 3-5A title with a 15-0 district record before running through the playoffs, culminating with a 10-1 romping of La Cueva to win the 5A state title.
Las Cruces volleyball wins the 5A state championship undefeated
Another Las Cruces team also won a state title unbeaten when the Bulldawgs took home the 2024 5A state volleyball championship. Las Cruces lost just four sets in its 27 wins and took down La Cueva in straight sets to take home consecutive state championships.
Centennial football takes down Las Cruces to win the District 3-6A title
A clash of two titans at the end of the regular season saw Centennial pull away from Las Cruces to win the District 3-6A title thanks to its 429 rushing yards. The Hawks maintained their unbeaten record and clinched the No. 2 seed in the 6A playoffs with the victory.
Centennial boys' soccer wins the 5A state championship
Centennial won its first state title of the 2024-25 sports season when its boys' soccer team defeated La Cueva in the 5A state title game. Raphael Marceaux earned his finest moment when he scored a 100th-minute game-winner in sudden-death extra time to give the Hawks their crown.
Mayfield girls' basketball coach George Maya earns his 600th career win
Three-time state champion George Maya, who has been Mayfield's girls' basketball coach since the 1996-97 season, won his 600th career game when the Trojans defeated rival Las Cruces on Feb. 6. Maya was celebrated after the game with a banner and a trophy in his honor.
Las Cruces baseball coach Gil Padilla wins 400th career game
Las Cruces baseball coach Gil Padilla earned a milestone moment with his 400th career win after a 7-3 win over IDEA Rio Vista College Preparatory (Texas) on March 22.
Organ Mountain runner Corbin Coombs breaks multiple records
Coombs broke many records during the 2025 track season. He first broke the New Mexico record for the fastest mile at the Millrose Games in February before breaking two other state records at May's 5A state track meet in the 800 and 3,200 races. Coombs then broke a meet record for the 5,000 race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in June.
Organ Mountain football wins first district game since 2019
The week after breaking an 18-game losing streak, Organ Mountain won its first district game since 2019 with a victory over Alamogordo. The win was sealed after the Knights' Alejandro Guerra intercepted a last-second Hail Mary pass from the Tigers.
Gadsden's Mathius Soto wins wrestling state title undefeated
Soto was one of two Las Cruces-area male wrestlers who won individual state championships at the NMAA State Wrestling Championships in February, alongside Las Cruces' Kolby Gonzales. Soto completed a 48-0 season by defeating Cleveland's Marcus Abeyta in the 133-pound division final to win his state title.
Chaparral football wins first-ever playoff game
Chaparral achieved a historic moment for its program when it pulled off an upset to win its first state playoff game in 2024. The 12-seeded Lobos shut out No. 5 seed Portales 10-0 in the first round of the 4A playoffs, with Chaparral quarterback Israel Nieto throwing the game's only touchdown.
Three Las Cruces female athletes win Gatorade Player of the Year
Las Cruces High saw three of its best female athletes win Gatorade New Mexico Player of the Year honors for their respective sports. Addison Massey was the first to do so in volleyball, Mia Barela was next in girls' soccer and Kaselle Davis completed the trio in girls' track and field. Massey and Davis won their honors for the second time.
Mesilla Valley Christian boys' golf wins 4th straight state title
Tanner Gentry, Beau Barker, Garrett Cathey, Cade Horton and Nolan Jensen were all part of a monumental moment for Las Cruces' Christian school by winning Mesilla Valley Christian's fourth consecutive state championship. The quintet earned a score of 634 as a team across two rounds in the A-3A championship match to take home first place once again.
