It's July, which means it's almost time for the World Championship of Dainty.
On the last Monday on the month, hundreds of people will gather in the Schnitzelburg neighborhood, along George Hauck Way, located beside Hauck’s, 1000 Goss Ave., for the ultimate skills contest.
Dainty is a game that originated from German immigrants in the early 1800s and features a dainty (a 5-inch stick) and a 3-foot bat where players, who must be at least 45 years of age, compete and try to launch the dainty in the air and hit it the farthest, within bounds, in an attempt to be crowned champion.
Think it's easy? It's not.

What are the rules of the World Championship of Dainty?
The game requires two items: a dainty and a bat. The dainty is a 5-inch stick tapered on both ends and the bat is a 3-foot stick, often made from an old broomstick, tapered on one end, according to Louisville Tourism.
"Players place the dainty on the ground and tap it with the bat in attempt to launch the dainty airborne. Once airborne, players swing the bat at the dainty hoping to make contact. The person to launch the dainty the furthest distance is crowned the Dainty World Champion," the tourism website states.
All players must be 45 years or older to participate. While playing, contestants must use only one arm and are allotted three strikes before considered out. A strike consists of any contact between the bat and the dainty, according to the tourism website.
