An NBA insider questions Trae Young's potential contract extension with the Atlanta Hawks.
Trae Young's Extension Value 'Too High' For the Hawks, NBA Insider Suggest originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
It looks like the Atlanta Hawks are committed to their star, Trae Young. This summer, they've made moves to complement Young and potentially help him return to the playoffs, after missing it for two straight years.
The Hawks have added Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Luke Kennard and Kristaps Porzingis this summer. They've been one of the most active organizations since free agency started. Together with the young core of Zaccharie Risacher, Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels, Atlanta could return to being a competitive team next for the 2025-26 season.
However, one of the concerns for the organization is the upcoming contract extension for Young. The four-time All-Star is eligible to sign a four-year, $222 million contract extension with the Hawks. Signing a maximum deal would be huge for the star point guard, but an NBA insider has questioned if he's deserving of it.
On Friday, Young's potential contract was the topic on ESPN's "NBA Today." League insider Bobby Marks rejected the idea of giving the All-Star guard the maximum extension.
“I would approach it with an extension but not at the 4 (years) for 222 (million) number here,” stated Marks. “I think we are at a day and age of roster building where you have to be extremely careful when you hand out max contracts, where you are averaging out $55 million.”
Marks said he wants to see how the roster constructed around Young performs first.
“Trae Young is certainly an All-Star level player. I’m not putting him up there in a Top 15, maybe even Top 20 in the NBA. I want to see how this roster develops.”
Marks doubled down on Young's situation by bringing up Daniels, who's also up for an extension. The insider warned the Hawks to be careful with how they spend their salary cap.
