Most accounts of Cam Johnson talking about his new environment with the Denver Nuggets will make it abundantly obvious that the recently-traded forward is excited to be in the Mile High City. Johnson also ensured that his old team knew there were no bad feelings on the way out.
The former Brooklyn Nets forward had his introductory press conference with the Nuggets on Friday. Johnson shared his feelings about his old team candidly for all those in attendance. One department got some major love in particular.
"I have so much respect for that coaching staff in Brooklyn," Johnson told the media. "I really appreciated them. I really loved playing for Jordi [Fernandez]. I think Jordi has a tremendously bright future in this league."
The Nuggets forward continued, "I think Brooklyn has a bright future too. So, obviously I'll keep up with them, and you guys understand this by now. The NBA, once you're in it, you develop those relationships, and they don't just leave when you get traded. They don't just disappear. So those are my guys for sure."
This is the second time Johnson has been traded during his playing days in the NBA. The sharpshooting forward started his career with the Phoenix Suns before finding a home in Brooklyn following the blockbuster that landed Kevin Durant in the desert.
The deal involving Michael Porter Jr. does not carry the same kind of weight as the Durant trade. However, it may prove to be the more impactful move in the long run.
Johnson is exactly the type of player who should be capable of thriving with the Nuggets as a complementary piece to Nikola Jokic. A championship in Denver would certainly leave this trade in a favorable light in Colorado.
The veteran sniper may have never gotten the opportunity to be where he is today without the Nets and spending a substantial part of his best years in Brooklyn. It has him primed to be a big part of a contender in 2025-26 as a result.
