The Sacramento Kings were named among the NBA teams that got worse this offseason as their long-term plan remains unclear.
Kings Among Teams That Regressed This Offseason With Long-Term Plan Unclear originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Sacramento Kings entered the offseason with a key decision to make about whether they wanted to begin a rebuild or make moves to challenge for a playoff spot next season.
Sacramento chose to make moves as they signed Dennis Schroder in free agency and traded Jonas Valanciunas to the Denver Nuggets for Dario Saric.
During the draft, the Kings selected Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud as they added two young players to their core.
Despite these moves, Bleacher Report’s Mo Dakhil listed the Kings as one of the teams who have gotten worse this offseason.
“The Sacramento Kings—or should we call them Chicago Bulls West?—have not made any strides this offseason. It's unclear what their long-term plan is,” Dakhil wrote. “The Kings' decline happened fast. The reunion of DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine did not yield the desired results. Sacramento's big offseason move was to overpay Dennis Schröder on a three-year, $45 million fully guaranteed deal. He fills a ball-handler/playmaker need for Sacramento, but if you take a closer look at his fit, a problem stands out. Sacramento finished this past season ranked 19th in three-point percentage. How are the Kings going to create space with DeRozan, Schröder and Domantas Sabonis sharing the floor?”
Dakhil makes a great point about the Kings’ long-term plan remaining uncertain and their addition of Schroder is an interesting one.
Of course, the Kings have built a lineup of Schroder, LaVine, DeRozan, Keegan Murray and Sabonis but they still lack depth off their bench and their starting five has not worked out well together thus far.
Because of this, the Kings may be heading towards yet another disappointing season that could see them miss the playoffs once again and if that happens, a rebuild may be on the horizon in Sacramento as they try to turn their franchise around.
