Reds make position change for Noelvi Marte to try and chase playoff spot

Marte moving to the outfield.

The Cincinnati Reds know they need Noelvi Marte in their lineup, now and in the future.

To do so, they're exploring whether the infielder can play a whole new position.

On Sunday, Marte is starting in right field for the Reds.

Prior to this, Marte has only played second base, third base and a bit of shortstop in MLB for Cincinnati. Those are the only three positions Marte has played in the minors, too.

The 23-year old Cuban is hitting .272 this season with five doubles, six homers and five steals in 30 games.

This isn't a move out of the blue, according to beat writer Gordon Wittenmyer.

"A Reds move that's been in the works for awhile is getting its first test run today, with Noelvi Marte starting in right field," Wittenmyer wrote on X. "The athletic shortstop-by-trade is viewed as a potential long-term solution in the outfield."

The Reds enter Marte's outfield debut game at 52-47, 7.5 games back in the NL Central of the Cubs (6.5 back of the Brewers).

In a crowded NL wild card picture, Cincinnati is going to have to get hot and stay that way. Marte in right field is their first out-of-the-box decision in an effort to get to the postseason.
