(WJHL) – Despite taking early leads on their home fields, both the Axmen and Doughboys needed late-inning heroics to prevail on Saturday night.
Kingsport’s early 3-0 lead quickly turned into an 8-4 deficit in the fourth inning against Danville. Still trailing 9-6 in the eighth, the Axmen used two RBI singles and a pair of bases-loaded walks to secure the 10-9 victory.
Landis Davila notched a trio of RBI, while Kam Durnin drove home a pair of runs, as well.
In Johnson City, the Doughboys held a six-run lead after just two innings against the River Riders. But, Elizabethton continued to chip away, eventually taking its first lead of the contest on a Cadyn Karl two-run homer in the seventh.
Trailing 9-8, Logan Fyffe grounded into a double play to score Trey Majette to tie the game in the eighth.
Then, in the ninth, Landon Smelser (Science Hill/Tennessee Tech) provided the walk-off RBI single to complete the rally.
Majette went 4-for-4 on the night with three RBI and a pair of runs scored in the win. Brandon Chang also drove home two runs for the Doughboys.
Jackson Berry (Science Hill/ETSU) supplied two hits and an RBI for Elizabethton in defeat.
