The Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks have both been very active this summer, making coaching changes and new additions to their backcourts. Now, both teams are reportedly targeting the same veteran in NBA free agency.

In his latest livestream for Bleacher Report, NBA reporter Jake Fischer said that the Kings and Knicks remain the two teams he’s heard still have interest in Ben Simmons.

“For Ben Simmons, the two teams we’re hearing for him still are Sacramento and New York. We are still anticipating the Kings to be bringing in another veteran guard, and Ben Simmons is on that list of potential targets in addition to Russell Westbrook, to Malcolm Brogdon.”

It’s not the first time New York and Sacramento have both been linked to a free-agent guard. The two clubs reportedly also have interest in future Hall of Famer Russell Westbrook, who remains unsigned. However, nothing has materialized on that front.

As of now, Sacramento might be the less likely of the two teams to sign Simmons. Reports previously surfaced that the Kings’ front office feels its backcourt is crowded after signing Dennis Schröder and drafting Nique Clifford. Therefore, barring a Malik Monk trade, adding Simmons seems unlikely.

New York would also likely be more appealing to Simmons than Sacramento, given that he chose to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers last season after being bought out by the Brooklyn Nets. If he signs with the Knicks, Simmons would likely find himself competing for minutes behind guards Jalen Brunson, Miles McBride, and Jordan Clarkson. However, given the apparent lack of other suitors, an end-of-the-bench role might be his only option.
