in their first pre-season friendly of the summer, Manchester United produced a drab goalless draw against arch-rivals Leeds United on Saturday.

The Red Devils looked lost at times, especially in the first half with their midfield lacking any real control. It was clear to see that Ruben Amorim needs reinforcements in the middle of the park.

The situation improved in the second 45 minutes, with United creating quite a few chances, but just like last season, they failed to find the back of the net due to a combination of bad luck and poor finishing.

The newly-promoted side also had their fair share of opportunities, with Tom Heaton producing a couple of fantastic saves to keep the scores level in the second half.

Heaton produced a couple of outstanding saves

The Englishman, who recently signed a one-year contract extension, spoke to MUTV (via MEN) after the game, and explained that the fire within him was burning bright, because of which he decided to commit for another year.

“That has always been my message. When the opportunity came to stay for another year in the summer, as always, the priority is to try and get in the shirt.

“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I could do that and go and deliver performances. I hope today showed that.”

His last appearance came under Erik ten Hag, and his second homecoming has seen him earn only three caps and he is desperate to add to those numbers.

His impressive performance in Stockholm comes at the perfect time, with Andre Onana injured for six weeks and United in search of a quality backup for the Cameroonian.

Should the 39-year-old earn more minutes in the upcoming pre-season games and he continues to impress, who knows? He might start the new season in between the sticks.

“Competition for places is exactly what we want. This is Manchester United Football Club and it should be competitive in every single position.

“You are competing against everyone else in the world because that is the reach of this football club.

“For me, it is about performing, working every day, taking the opportunity when it comes and hopefully keep showing the manager what I am capable of.”

There have been rumours that Altay Bayindir could be sold, with the Turk struggling when called upon last season. His distribution left a lot to be desired in the first half against Leeds.
