The New York Mets are in the market for pitching ahead of the MLB trade deadline, with the club known to be interested in All-Star starting pitcher Mitch Keller. However, there is a far less heralded pitcher whom New York is also eyeing for a trade this month.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Mets have an interest in acquiring Minnesota Twins left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe.

  • Danny Coulombe stats (ESPN): 0.68 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 29-7 K-BB ratio in 26.2 innings pitched

Coulombe, age 35, isn’t one of the most well-known MLB trade candidates available this summer. However, the veteran southpaw has been outstanding out of the Twins’ bullpen this year. Entering MLB games today, the 5-foot-10 reliever has held opponents to a .186/.240/.216 triple-slash line with a .457 OPS against 104 batters.

He would also be a very affordable addition for New York. He’s on an expiring contract, reducing the amount of prospect capital required to obtain him, and is owed less than half of his remaining $3 million salary this season. If New York acquired him at the MLB trade deadline on July 31, less than $1 million would be added to the Mets’ payroll in 2025.

Coulombe could fill the void created in the Mets’ bullpen when A.J. Minter underwent season-ending surgery in May. He’s also more than capable of handling hitters from both sides of the plate, limiting left-handed hitters to a .469 OPS while right-handed hitters have a .445 OPS against him this year.

With Minnesota below the .500 mark and five games back of the final wild card spot in the American League, it stands to reason that Coulombe could be moved. While acquiring him wouldn’t be viewed as a major addition for New York, it would improve the team’s bullpen depth.
