The Boston Red Sox are looking to add a starting pitcher at the MLB trade deadline. Thanks to a ten-game winning streak leading up to the All-Star break, Boston will likely buy at the month's end.
However, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Red Sox got some bad news on one of their top trade targets in the rotation. Despite the rumors, Boston might not be in great shape to land Minnesota Twins starter Joe Ryan.
"Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta and Minnesota's Joe Ryan have also been floated as possible trade chips," Feinsand writes, "Though sources said the two right-handers are unlikely to be moved before the deadline."
The Red Sox would've loved to bring in Ryan, who at 29 years old, is under team control through 2027, and has a strong 2.72 ERA this season.
The Twins' ace has been much improved this season, as he has a career-best ERA and winning percentage (.691 at 9-4). In 19 games (18 starts), Ryan pitched 109.1 innings with 121 strikeouts and a 0.915 WHIP.
Walker Buehler has been a disappointment, and the production of Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello is uncertain. Combined with the injuries to Hunter Dobbins, Kutter Crawford, and Tanner Houck, the Red Sox need to add a starter.
Ryan, the Twins ace and All-Star, would be the perfect addition. He's under multiple years of control and would be a nice complement to Crochet atop the rotation.
But this update is bad news for the Red Sox, as the indication is the Twins won't sell Ryan at the deadline. It's not completely over yet, but this report doesn't bode well for the Twins ace to come to Boston.
