After freeing themselves from the Bradley Beal debacle, the Phoenix Suns are financially flexible and ready to try their hand at the free agent market. One name has quickly emerged as a new candidate for the Suns to add this summer.
Jake Fischer delivered a new report of the murmurings behind closed doors on Thursday. The Suns are reportedly stepping up to try and add themselves to the mix for one of the biggest restricted free agents available on the market.
One of the main focuses on the rumor mill roundup for Fischer was the evolving situation of Jonathan Kuminga. It is one that the Suns now find themselves a part of. However, to be clear, the NBA insider did not sound too optimistic about their chances.
Fischer wrote, "Sources say Phoenix, meanwhile, is the latest team to express exploratory interest in a Kuminga sign-and-trade … challenging as it would be for the Suns to make such a deal happen."
The insider added, "Fresh off completing a buyout of Bradley Beal this week, enabling the Suns to waive-and-stretch the hefty contract possessed by the three-time NBA All-Star guard, they have contacted both Kuminga's representation and the Warriors to make their fondness for the bouncy swingman known."
The problem with the Suns' involvement here would be the lack of assets they possess to get this deal moving. Fischer did not see very many attractive scenarios for the Warriors in a sign-and-trade here.
"The Suns, to be clear, do not appear to possess the sort of draft capital or players that Golden State is believed to be seeking in exchange for Kuminga," Fischer noted. "Yet he certainly did come up in trade talks between the teams during the season, sources say, when the Warriors were pursuing the re-acquisition of Kevin Durant."
Kuminga is certainly the type of young talent the Suns would benefit from gambling on after overhauling the roster this offseason. However, the practicality of them getting something done remains doubtful.
