The summer months are still blazing along, which means another week of looking at some of the past moments in Pueblo sports history.
As we look back at some of the most important moments, we want to give you, the fans, a chance to have your voices heard.
The Pueblo Chieftain, along with information provided by the Greater Pueblo Sports Hall of Fame, has put together a list of the greatest moments in Pueblo sports history.
Over the next four weeks, readers can vote on their favorite moment. Each week, the moment with the most votes will earn a spot in the final round until there are five top favorite moments. Then, the top five will battle it out in a final poll for the best moment in Pueblo sports history.
This poll will close at midnight on Friday, July 25. The next poll will open on Saturday, July 26. There are no voting restrictions, so vote now and vote often!
Here are this week’s greatest moments in Pueblo sports history:
- Andy Garcia becomes a four-time
Pueblo East’s Andy Garcia becomes the first wrestler in Colorado history to win four consecutive state titles as a heavyweight.
- Hunter Willits becomes the first Pueblo four-time
Willits put on an impressive run during his time at Pueblo County, becoming the first ever four-time state champion in wrestling in Pueblo history.
- Gonzalo Roldan became the first state high school wrestling champion
Roldan put Pueblo on the map in the wrestling world back in 1949 as he became the first in Pueblo history to win a state title for Pueblo Central High School.
- Lillianna Lopez and Acelyn Duran became the first set of girls from Pueblo to win state titles in wrestling
A bit of recent history, but Lopez and Duran, along with the entire girls wrestling team in 2025, set numerous records, including becoming the first girls to win a state wrestling title from Pueblo.
- 2004-05 Pueblo South Colts wrestling team won back-to-back titles
The Colts became the first wrestling team in Pueblo history to win back-to-back state team titles during their 2004-2005 run led by head coach Jerry Sisneros.
