Shedeur Sanders was projected to be the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback during the 2029 NFL season. For some reason.
The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation continues to spiral out of control, and it’s starting to make even the boldest predictions about Sanders look realistic.
In a recent discussion on X, Max Loeb of HonorTheLand speculated that the Browns may have no choice but to roll with Sanders sooner rather than later, suggesting Week 1 of the 2029 season as a potential starting point.
While that timeline feels far away, the reason it’s being floated now is simple.
“I think it would almost be a mistake in the Browns’ world to not roll somebody out like [Sanders] Week 1. The only interesting thing here is, what does that look like in terms of your rookie quarterback deal? Because Shedeur Sanders will obviously be on his rookie deal in four years… The reality is, it’s more likely than not that we see Shedeur Sanders in the next two years,” Loeb said. “In a perfect world, Shedeur Sanders does roll out Week 1, 2029, for the Cleveland Browns.”
That may seem outrageous to some, but it aligns with the faith certain Browns fans, and even notable Cleveland celebrities, have in Sanders’ long-term upside.
WWE superstar and Browns superfan The Miz recently defended the team’s decision to select Sanders in the fifth round, calling it one of the biggest steals of the NFL Draft.
“The way I see it, him being drafted in the third round… the Browns went after who they wanted. That’s the quarterback they wanted,” The Miz said to Andrew Hughes of The Sporting News.
“We got amazing value with Shedeur. I thought Shedeur was going in the top five… The fact that we got him in the fifth round… I’m stoked at the draft. We got a steal. I’m really excited to see what the Browns do this year.”
The Cleveland Browns’ QB room is falling apart
The reason this “wild” Sanders prediction is gaining momentum isn’t because Sanders has skyrocketed up the Browns’ depth chart.
Far from it.
In fact, he’s still reportedly sitting fourth behind Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Joe Flacco in training camp.
But none of those names have inspired confidence.
Gabriel, once considered a potential dark horse for the starting job, hasn’t separated himself from Pickett. While Sanders has yet to show he’s ready for NFL speed.
The idea is that the team may “risk it for the biscuit” on a quarterback like LaNorris Sellers in next year’s draft. Sellers, unlike Gabriel or Sanders, looks the part of a first-round NFL quarterback, bringing both size and athleticism that Cleveland’s current crop lacks.
Cleveland’s track record with quarterbacks is about as good as Taylor Swift’s choices of boyfriends. Sanders wasn’t drafted to start immediately, but if things continue unraveling for Gabriel and Pickett, it’s not hard to imagine the Browns giving Sanders the ball just to see what they’ve got.
The reality is, Cleveland didn’t draft Sanders because of his flawless mechanics or his polish. They drafted him because of his upside, his athleticism, and the marketability of a player whose name carries weight thanks to his father, Coach Prime.
Hopefully, the Sanders family can be the NFL version of the NBA’s Ball family.
