Cincinnati Reds center fielder TJ Friedl was battered and bruised by New York Mets pitchers all night long Friday.
NEW YORK – Almost lost in the shadows of an impressive comeback victory by the Cincinnati Reds over the New York Mets in their first game out of the All-Star break was the history leadoff man TJ Friedl made.
That's history as in, "Ouch!"
The Reds center fielder was hit by pitches three times Friday night – by three different pitchers – in the third, fifth and eighth innings.
He became the second Reds batter in the modern (post-1900) era to pull off that painful feat, joining Derek Dietrich (June 21, 2019, at Milwaukee).
It also tied a major-league record held by many.
Friedl scored twice after getting hit as the Reds took an 8-2 lead into the ninth inning behind the seven innings of impressive pitching from starter Nick Lodolo (3.33 ERA this season) and home runs from Austin Hays (two), Matt McLain and Tyler Stephenson.
