The Brewers will be without Sal Frelick for a bit as he recovers from a hamstring strain
LOS ANGELES – The bad news is Sal Frelick is hitting the injured list to begin the second half.
The good news is the Milwaukee Brewers aren’t expected to be without the player some metrics value as their most valuable for long.
Frelick was placed on the 10-day IL ahead of the Brewers’ first game out of the break with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain, July 18 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Blake Perkins, yet to make his season debut after suffering a fractured shin during spring training, was activated off the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.
Frelick, who suffered the injury making a sliding catch in the final game before the break July 13, had his IL placement backdated to July 15.
“I feel better than I thought when it happened Sunday,” Frelick said. “It came at a good time, that we’re able to retroactive it to (Tuesday).”
Frelick ran at 50-60% in the outfield at Dodger Stadium July 18. He’s been progressing well this week, which included treatments with his personal trainer back home in the Boston area over the all-star break.
“They know my trainer pretty well back home,” Frelick said. “Our head trainers here just linked up with them and I got in for treatment every day and rehab.”
Manager Pat Murphy’s hope is that Frelick will not require a rehab assignment, but acknowledged there’s still significant progress that has to be made before slotting him back in the lineup.
“Just knowing Sal, he’s going to want to return as soon as possible, but we got to be smart,” Murphy said. “He’s a really important part of our club. It’s difficult to think about playing without him because he’s such an intricate cog of our club.”
