The quarterback battle at Mizzou is going to be an interesting race to follow this season
The Missouri Tigers find themselves in an interesting situation that they haven’t been in for years, and that is trying to find a new starting quarterback.
Coming into this season, the Tigers will be looking at two potential starters: Sam Horn and Penn State transfer QB Beau Pribula, who had everyone at SEC Media Days talking.
Many, like SEC Network commentator Jordan Rodgers, are asking did the Mizzou coaching staff make the right decision in picking a guy out of the portal who isn’t known to be a passer.
“I tell ya what,” Rodgers said, “that is the biggest wild card to me. You watch the tape, you can’t see anything. Not once do I think he had a drop-back pass … every time he was in, it was gimmicky because he was kind of that changeup, running quarterback. He’s got a ton of physical talent. I think his arm is good, but I have no freakin’ clue because you don’t see him in a situation and go, ‘Oh, that’s what it could look like at Missouri.’ You have no idea.”
Rodgers is not wrong. Pribula was not asked to do much when he came in behind starter Drew Allar. He only attempted 35 passes in 187 snaps, but that doesn’t seem to bother head coach Eli Drinkwitz.
“I don’t think when you watch the tape, there’s not an inability for Beau to throw, he just didn’t quite have the opportunities,” he said. “I would say after this spring, I’m as confident as ever that Beau is a very talented passer. I don’t really have any reservations about that.”
The upside to Pribula is that he is a great rusher, rushing for over 240 yards and four touchdowns in case Drinkwitz ever decides to run the wishbone. Pribula made headlines last year when he abruptly left the team before the Nittany Lions' first playoff appearance. Horn was recently drafted by the LA Dodgers in the Major League Baseball Draft but says he’s committed to playing football this season.
