Burglars have broken into the house of Michel Platini and stolen medals and trophies belonging to the former football player and ex-UEFA president.

Platini was woken by noises outside his house near Marseille and was surprised to see a hooded individual dressed in black outside his bay window.

After the person ran away, he realized that about 20 medals and trophies had disappeared from a garden shed where he kept some of his prizes, the public prosecutor's office in Marseille said.

Platini's lawyer initially refused to comment. According to media reports, the French football great was not harmed in the incident.

Platini was honoured with the Ballon d'Or three times and was European champion with France in 1984. He later coached the France national team before serving as UEFA president from 2007 to 2015.
