The Texas Rangers are set to call up veteran first baseman Rowdy Tellez to bolster their roster as the second half of the season gets underway.

Tellez is expected to help fill the void left by Jake Burger, who was placed on the 10-day injured list for a left quad strain on Wednesday.

This designation marks Burger’s second stint on the injured list this year, leaving a significant gap at first base just as Texas enters a crucial stretch in its playoff push.

Tellez previously joined the Rangers organization on July 5 on a minor league contract after being designated for assignment and released by the Seattle Mariners earlier this month.

The 30-year-old first baseman posted a batting average of just .208 with 11 home runs and 27 RBIs across 62 games in Seattle before his release, though he seemingly impressed the Rangers during his stint in the minor leagues.

Tellez put together a .333 batting average with two home runs and four RBIs over four games with the Rangers’ Triple-A Round Rock Express.

The Rangers, who open a three-game home series against the Detroit Tigers tonight at 7:05 p.m., have struggled to find consistent offense at first base, with Burger’s injuries and early-season slumps limiting his production to a .228 average and 11 home runs in 75 games.

As the club tries to remain in postseason contention, Texas is turning to Tellez’s left-handed power to stabilize its lineup against right-handed pitching.

While Tellez’s 2025 numbers do not jump off the screen, his .682 on-base-plus-slugging percentage still ranks near the middle of the Rangers’ starters, and the recent minor league surge suggests he may provide an immediate lift.

With 65 games remaining and a favorable schedule ahead, Texas is seemingly relying on veteran experience to propel a playoff run in the coming months.

The Rangers currently sit 8.5 games behind the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West Division, but they are also just 3.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the final wild card spot.

Texas has one last series against the Mariners remaining on its schedule this season, with those games likely to play a significant role in whether this team can make a push for the playoffs.

Although this team has not performed well through the first portion of the season, a strong end to the year could propel this team into the postseason picture.
