Former Louisville QB Tyler Shough's contract power play could trigger ripple effect across NFL

Tyler Shough is looking to make a huge power play for himself and his future. However, his power play could have repercussions for other NFL teams.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough

The Saints find themselves in a situation similar to the Browns, entering the season without a clear starting quarterback. This uncertainty is setting the stage for a healthy competition under center. As of now, the presumed starter for the Saints is Tyler Shough, with only Spencer Rattler standing in his way.

“I’d say Saints rookie Tyler Shough has the best chance to start, with only Spencer Rattler in his way in New Orleans,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote. “Jaxson Dart, Gabriel or Sanders may eventually get real work with their teams but probably not from the very beginning of the season. A rookie QB starting anywhere else would signal disaster.”

When Shough was drafted, ESPN’s Ryan Clark offered high praise and serious hype.

“He can flat out throw a football. He understands where it needs to go, when it needs to get there and exactly where it needs to be on the receiver,” Clark said.

However, Shough has been holding out from signing his contract, seeking guaranteed money—a bet that he will be the Saints’ starting quarterback.

Ari Meirov believes this isn’t just a personal move, but one that could impact other players taken before him in the draft.

“Second-round picks are slowly starting to sign, but the big x-factor is believed to be No. 40 overall with Saints QB Tyler Shough. Shough has a real shot to be a starter, and the Saints likely don’t want their potential QB1 missing time. He’s pushing for a fully guaranteed deal — and if he gets it, it could be a game-changer for the unsigned picks ahead of him (Nos. 35–39), who are believed to be waiting to see how this plays out,” Meirov wrote.

If Shough succeeds in securing exactly what he wants, it could become a nightmare scenario for teams who drafted just ahead of the Saints. Those second-round picks may have just become a lot more expensive.
